about

We literally arranged this hours before going to the studio to record it. We were practicing in my parents' carriage house in Rossford and I had gotten pretty tired of the old "precious" intro. I wanted it to be more driving and we totally re-worked the chord structure into what you hear here.

That feeling of creating something really satisfying on the spot with creative people that you have so much respect for is probably the best feeling you can get from playing in a band. When you reach that point where you're not really thinking about process or stepping on toes or ego and you can just create music with other people and be happy with the results, you've reached musical nirvana. Don't do what we did and break up the band when you get there.

If you don't know the story of Sonny Liston, you should go check it out. He was probably the most hated man in the history of boxing, if not of all professional sports. His second fight against Muhammed Ali is perhaps the most (in)famous moment in boxing. Rumors abounded that the Nation of Islam would kill Liston unless he threw his rematch against Ali. Liston went down in the first round on a phantom punch from Ali. That match is more or less what this song is about. It's also an allegory for having an argument with someone and letting them win because the cost of winning is too great.

Liston's tombstone reads, simply, "A Man."

lyrics

No, I won't back down without a fight. Because I'm Sonny Liston and I know that I'm right. I can't take much more - you're so brash and bold - because I'm Sonny Liston and I'm growing old. I couldn't finish the bout, now I'm soundly defeated. I wanted and got my rematch but I just couldn't stay on my feet. All anyone wants to know is whether I took a dive or am I just washed up and past my prime. I swallowed my pride. I am a man and I did what I had to, because I'm Sonny Liston and you're the greatest.

about

treysuno Bowling Green, Ohio

It's exceptionally rare that a rock band affects the lives of people. Most of the time they're just background noise, easily dismissed and happily forgotten. One of the true joys of being in treysuno is knowing that we were the soundtrack to some of the best years of the lives of a couple dozen people. Who needs a stadium tour when you can make a deeply personal connection like that? ... more
