about

This is one that Speed Governor 2.0 did the bulk of the heavy lifting on in development, but that band broke up before we could do anything with it. I wasn't entirely sold on this as a treysuno song just because it's so heavy and it relies on a lot of added and subtracted measures to keep it from being too plodding. But these dudes have never backed down from a challenge and, of course, it sounds awesome.

"Speramus Meliora, Resurget Cineribus" is the motto of the city of Detroit, which translates to "We hope for better things, it will rise from the ashes." The motto was written after a fire consumed the entire city - save for one building - in 1805.

The lyrics were the last that I wrote for treysuno, and they're fundamentally about Donald Trump (which should be pretty obvious, but hey, maybe I was a little more clever than I thought.) There's also the notion of the cleansing fire, destroying all that came before so that we can start anew. But there's a cautionary side to that, in that what we rebuild from nothing can only be a reflection of our current selves. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," as Santayana said.

Prescott's guitar solo at the end of this *rips*. And if you're really interested in what synth I used for the second half of that solo, it's actually a ZVEX Fuzz Factory guitar pedal set up to self-oscillate, and then I just twiddled the knobs and made wacky sounds come out of it.

lyrics

Oh for Christ's sake, pump the brakes on your gospel of prosperity. A tooth for a tooth is the businessman's truth, but it isn't for me. We've overthrown the rule of kings. We all hope for better things. To act like the boss, get down off the cross that your faithful designed. I need more from you than a sentence or two saying "everything's fine." Your family graft, your tarnished crown, your name in lights: it's burning down. Burn the whole thing down and it will rise from the ashes. It will become what we make it. It will become who we are.

about

treysuno Bowling Green, Ohio

It's exceptionally rare that a rock band affects the lives of people. Most of the time they're just background noise, easily dismissed and happily forgotten. One of the true joys of being in treysuno is knowing that we were the soundtrack to some of the best years of the lives of a couple dozen people. Who needs a stadium tour when you can make a deeply personal connection like that? ... more
