about

I was in Washington D.C. in spring 2017 for work and had a day off, so I walked all around the National Mall, from the Capitol to the Jefferson Memorial, to the Lincoln Memorial to the White House. In the original plan, those four points were to be aligned in opposition, forming a cross of Washington's most recognizable landmarks.

The Washington Monument was intended to be built at the point where the two connecting lines intersect, but the ground at that exact spot was so unstable that the monolith would have sunk during construction or toppled over. So it was built 390 feet to the east-southeast, which is noticeably asymmetrical to the observer.

I thought it to be an allegory about what happens when you prop up flawed men to be venerated as something larger than life. Even with the best of intentions, those flaws will become apparent over time. Nothing should be immortalized as universally beloved without accounting for the distasteful bits of history. Or something like that.

lyrics

Erect our monuments to soar to the firmament. Rise up, rise up, rise up! Bronze cast with care, but fully unaware of this shaky ground. A still-life cavalry, a wartime reveille. Wake up, wake up, wake up! General principle is untenable on this shaky ground. It's all coming down. Give up, give up, give up! You're going to topple in time. The base from which you rise was built on shaky ground.

about

treysuno Bowling Green, Ohio

It's exceptionally rare that a rock band affects the lives of people. Most of the time they're just background noise, easily dismissed and happily forgotten. One of the true joys of being in treysuno is knowing that we were the soundtrack to some of the best years of the lives of a couple dozen people. Who needs a stadium tour when you can make a deeply personal connection like that? ... more
